Make Your Own Baby Wipes

Did you know the average baby wipe contains ingredients that are linked to either known or suspected endocrine disrupters, neurotoxins, irritants, and carciongenics.(1)  Yuck. Think of how often a baby gets wiped down with that sad little toxic cocktail. Not to worry! Although there are great companies out there  (Aleva Naturals, Jackson Reece) making super clean baby wipes, it's even better for the planet (and your wallet) to just make your own.

If you're super crafty you can literally make the wipes (ie. sew some pieces of cotton/flannel squares). If not...you can cheat a little (like me) and buy cotton reusable wipes from your favourite local baby company. I personally favour a brand called Indisposables which are nice and heavy duty, but to each their own.

Here's what you need:

  • A stack (10-12) cotton baby wipes
  • A container that has a proper seal (even an old plastic wipe container will do)
  • 1 cup of water
  • 1 splash of liquid baby soap
  • 1 drop of Tea Tree oil
  • 1 drop of Lavender oil
Here's what you do:
  • In your container, mix water, soap, and essential oils
  • Place folded wipes inside container and flip upside down so each wipe gets saturated
  • That's it. Easy Peasy.
Notes:
*I use Tea Tree oil because it's a great antibacterial and antiseptic oil, but it's very strong smelling so just a drop or two will do.
If you choose to use a different oil, make sure it's baby safe. Some oils are too potent and can actually cause harm, so always do your research first!
*Toss dirty wipes in your diaper pail and wash them with your diapers
*Clean out your wipe container each time you make a new batch
